The Global Fellowship is a programme which aims to increase awareness of the social, economic and environmental impact of globalisation on the population of the world.  We no longer can live in the belief that the choices we make are singular and affect only ourselves or the small number of people around us. Our team’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment is in line with the key aims and objectives of the British Council, the Department for Education, and our primary target audiences; Fellows (past, present and future), schools and colleges.

One of the British Council’s three corporate areas of work is climate change, the outcomes of which help us achieve our corporate purpose.  We work to:

  • Increase understanding of the case for tackling climate change
  • Increase support for the achievement and implementation of international agreements that address the threats of climate change
  • Strengthen relationships and networks which lead to action on climate change mitigation and adaptation

One of the primary areas of interest of the Global Fellowship is to foster conversations and understanding among young people of the economic and social impact of globalisation.  If we are equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become the leaders of tomorrow, it is also to do so responsibly with concern for future generations.  The leaders of tomorrow will need to be armed with an understanding of and sensitivity to the environmental impact of the economic and social choices they make, and conversely the impact of the environment on their ability to make those choices. From the declared interests of our primary audience (Fellows, the Fellowship Network and schools and colleges), environmental sustainability is also a key concern.

Core team values:

We will address issues of environmental responsibility in internal monitoring and evaluation by asking;

i.            if environmental issues have been addressed in the delivery of a particular area / activity,

ii.           if so, how and to what effect

iii.          if not, why not.

We will always opt for environmentally conscious and/or ethically sourced products if they are available and expect our partners to do the same.

In 2009, all Global Fellowship branded material was made from recylced material or came from ethical and sustainable sources.

We will raise awareness among participants of the environmental impact of running the Global Fellowship programme, as well as the environmental impact of globalisation alongside other social and economic questions.

We will continue to work with our partners and primary stakeholder to raise awareness of the importance of responsible and environmentally conscious engagement in a global agenda.
